Exhibition News

John-David Biggs is presently preparing a major portrait exhibition of remarkable men and women, to be held in London in 2010.

He specialises in portraits of individuals in their later years, usually in their seventies and eighties, and uses a unique combination of plate-camera technique, natural interior daylight and the platinum palladium printing process. The resulting portraits reveal a great depth of character and a very real sense of presence.

There is presently a limited opportunity to nominate individuals for portraiture to be included in this exhibition, and the accompanying book.

Private commissions are also undertaken.

Specifications and Price

The physical portrait is rendered as a Platinum-Palladium Print on Aquarel Arches Archival Watercolour paper, measuring 24 inches by 20 inches.

I usually make an Artist's proof, which I keep for safekeeping, followed immediately by an edition of one, which is what you receive. You can request that the edition be limited to one, or if you feel you need more than one, we can arrange to set the edition at a higher number. For a premium you can request that the original negative and all internegatives be destroyed to further enhance the collector's value of the image.

It will be a signed portrait, though you can request to have it signed verso instead.

As platinum reacts very slowly to light, much more slowly than silver, these prints can be expected to last for several hundred years without fading or tarnishing, even if displayed in a well lit room. I can give you some framing guidelines, and have it framed for you if you wish. I always recommend the use of a true non reflective glass, such as True Vue or Den Glass, as it allows the viewer to enjoy the portrait almost as if there is no glass in the frame.

As my portraits are always a head and hands picture, the size of the portrait is important - I have occasionally made a smaller size, but it severely impinges on the sense of depth and presence of the subject. Similarly I have made silver images from my negatives, but again, the depth is missing.

The price of a portrait is £5,000; please note that this is subject to variations in the price of platinum.

I would be pleased to show examples of my work by appointment in London or Dublin.
